It has never been a conscious choice for Vivian to keep herself busy with fashion as a photographer. In fact, looking at her background in war law, she thought at the start of her studies at the photo academy that she wanted to become a documentary photographer. Because fashion photographer would give her access to ingredients such as styling, models, makeup and hair, with which she can tell my own story, this eventually led to this direction. It gives her opportunities for free play and experiments. Fashion photography gives her a space to create without limitations in collaboration with a team where we can all use our expertise to create something together.
Although fashion photography is sometimes not seen as a personal form of photography, it is indeed a way for her (and with her a lot of other photographers) to manifest personal desires or social themes that the photographer is concerned with. The free work series that she makes, are always inspired by events from her own life or various fascinations that she has. This can be seen in locations, models or subtle references to these events. Although, as far as she is concerned, her personal starting point does not have to be immediately visible to the viewer, it gives her a hold on my work. This brings her to a certain focus and allows her to create a series in a more targeted way.
She thinks it is very important to find a good balance between making free work and working on commercial assignments. Commercial assignments are often a lot of fun to work on, but are often more bound by specific restrictions for established brands. The collaboration with Pinkorangeclub was an exciting combination between creating free work and carrying out a commercial assignment. This time it was a big challenge to tell her own story without restrictions, but to tell the story and the starting point of the brand. Certainly, now that it concerned the product images, which are inserted very simply and therefore do not have much embrace to make the story clear.
